Long Beach Water Department’s General Manager Elected Board President of California Municipal Utilities Association for 2020-21 Term

Long Beach, California – Today, Long Beach Water announced that the Board of Governors of the California Municipal Utilities Association (CMUA) voted unanimously to select Chris Garner, Long Beach Water Department’s General Manager as CMUA Board President for 2020-21.

Since 1932, CMUA has represented the energy and water issues-related interests of California’s community-owned utilities before the California Legislature, the Governor’s Office and regulatory bodies, such as the California Energy Commission, the California Air Resources Board, the Department of Water Resources, the California Independent System Operator, and the State Water Resources Control Board. Today, the association represents 71 publicly owned water agencies and electric utilities statewide, who together provide water and electricity service to 70 and 25 percent of Californians respectively.

“It is an honor to be selected by the Board of Governors of CMUA to serve in this new role as Board President,” said Garner. “I am eager to continue working closely with CMUA member agencies to facilitate the reliability, sustainability and affordability of energy and water resources for all Californians.”

Mr. Garner is currently the General Manager of the City of Long Beach Water Department where he oversees the day-to-day operations and business activities of over 230 water system professionals. A Long Beach native, he has worked for the City of Long Beach for 36 years, including serving 16 years as the Director of the City’s Energy Resources Department before his start with the Long Beach Water Department in 2015.
