PUBLIC NOTICE: LONG BEACH UTILITIES ISSUES UPDATES REGARDING WATER MAIN BREAK AND BOIL WATER NOTICE
Boil Water Notice still in effect; activates call center and water distribution center for impacted residents and businesses
LONG BEACH, CA – Mayor Rex Richardson, alongside Long Beach Utilities General Manager Anatole Falagan and other City of Long Beach leaders, today shared updates regarding the Boil Water Notice issued on, Oct. 9, 2024. The Boil Water Notice, issued by Long Beach Utilities out of an abundance of caution after a significant water main break at 3502 Orange Ave. and subsequent low water pressure occurred, remains in effect for the following areas in Long Beach:
90805 zip code (east of the 710-Fwy)
90806 zip code (between Orange Avenue and Cherry Avenue, north of Spring Street; and Between N Pacific Place and Golden Avenue, north of W Wardlow Road, South of the 405– only if serviced by the Long Beach Utilities Department)
90807 zip code
Residents and businesses located in these areas continue to be advised to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking and cooking purposes as a safety precaution to avoid stomach or intestinal illness. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice.
Over the last 24 hours, City crews have mobilized to respond to and mitigate further impacts from the main break. Long Beach Utilities proactively manages water mainline maintenance. Long Beach Utilities continues to conduct specialized monitoring of water quality in the affected areas in coordination with the State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Drinking Water (DDW). The water quality tests in progress require 24 hours to complete. Long Beach Utilities will inform residents when comprehensive testing of the drinking water confirms the water is safe to drink pending coordination with DDW.
Long Beach Utilities has engaged with the Departments of Parks, Recreation and Marine, Health and Human Services (Health Department) and Fire to activate bottled water distribution centers at Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave.) and Somerset Park (1500 E. Carson St.) for residents and business owners in the 90805, 90807 and small parts of 90806 zip codes. Those in the impacted areas can pick up one case of bottled water, while supplies last, now until 8 p.m. today, Oct. 10. Identification and/or Utilities bill or other proof of residency is required upon pickup.
Staff from the Health Department’s Environmental Services Bureau and Economic Development Department’s Business Development Bureau have also been conducting outreach to affected businesses.
A community information line, available at (562) 570-2390, has been activated to provide information to and respond to questions from community members 24/7. Emergency notifications have been issued via Alert Long Beach, the City’s emergency notification system, and Wireless Emergency Alerts for registered users in the affected areas. Social media messaging has been disseminated across multiple City pages to increase reach to those affected. Residents and businesses are encouraged to review the FAQs and stay informed by visiting lbutilities.org and following @LBUtilities on social media and sign up for Alert Long Beach online or by downloading the CodeRED Mobile Alert app.
