Long Beach Utilities to host public budget workshops

LONG BEACH, CALIF. (MAY 1, 2023) — Residents and businesses can get involved and provide input at upcoming budget workshops hosted by the Long Beach Board of Utilities Commissioners.

At a series of four public workshops, the Board will discuss the proposed Fiscal Year 2024 budget, which covers the 12 months from October 2023 through September 2024.

Following the voter-approved consolidation of the city’s water, natural gas and sewer utilities in January 2023, this year’s budget discussions will now include the gas utility budget.

The meetings will be held on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, May 17
  • Thursday, May 25
  • Thursday, June 8
  • Thursday, June 22

“This year’s budget process will be a unique opportunity to learn about our department spending and priorities, and the first time we incorporate gas services into the discussion,” Board President Gloria Cordero said. “Thanks to the utility consolidation, this will be a great opportunity for the public to see a new level of detail about the gas budget. I encourage all to attend and share their thoughts.”

All meetings are held at 9 a.m. at the Long Beach Utilities Administration Building, 1800 E. Wardlow Road.

Budget workshops will include in-depth discussions about proposed improvements to the water, gas and sewer systems, including pipeline replacements and water quality enhancements.

The Board is also set to discuss strategies to increase local water supply, cost reduction efforts and any potential impacts on future water, natural gas and sewer rates.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the meetings and share input. Comments can also be sent via email to watercommission@lbutilities.org.

The Board is expected to adopt the final budget and rates at the June 22 meeting.
