LONG BEACH, CA – Today, the Long Beach Board of Utilities Commissioners approved the appointment of B. Anatole Falagán as General Manager of the Long Beach Utilities Department. Mr. Falagán will assume his new role on October 5, 2024.

“On behalf of the Board of Utilities Commissioners, we look forward to Mr. Falagán taking the mantle of department leadership. We are confident in his ability to oversee an annual budget of $378 million, with over 522 employees within the gas, water, and sewer utilities for the City of Long Beach,” says President Gina Rushing Maguire. “Mr. Falagán’s appointment is especially groundbreaking, as he will be the first Hispanic executive to lead the agency.”

Mr. Falagán has been with the Long Beach Water Department, and now Long Beach Utilities, since 2005. He has served in an executive position for the last 19 years, leading development of the Department’s first Water Resources Plan in 2019. Mr. Falagán is an accomplished engineer with over 30 years of utility experience. Since the merger of the City’s municipal utilities in 2022, he has overseen all aspects of Gas and Water Engineering, Utilities Resources, Finance and Management Information Systems.

Mr. Falagán is a recognized leader in the water industry. He has contributed to local water resource planning efforts in Southern California as part of Metropolitan Water District’s Climate Adaptation Master Plan Task Force and served as the Chair of the Budget Advisory Committee for the Water Replenishment District. In addition to these accomplishments, Mr. Falagán holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Stanford University, a Master of Science in Civil Engineering/Water Resources Engineering from Stanford University, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of California, Irvine. Mr. Falagán is a registered Professional Engineer in California and Texas.

“I thank the Board of Utilities Commissioners for entrusting me with the role of General Manager of Long Beach Utilities,” says Mr. Falagán. “I look forward to leading our merged utility of water, gas, and sewer services into a new chapter focused on climate resiliency and adaptation, and strong fiscal responsibility while continuing our reputation of excellent customer service.”
